  1. Thank you so much , you blew my mind about same size reel at different size series. You just save me from making a mistake I’m in the market for new rod and reel and I was going to purchase online. After watching this video I’m definitely going to the big box store to see and feel.

  2. Cpt. Myers. Im curious, doesn’t D.O.A mean dead on arrival? Or is it abbreviated for something else?😎
    Nice video thanks.

  3. Ultra light Nasci 1000 great perch crappie reel 6 lb test tops 30 is plenty for anything 40 or 3500 Penn are larger stippers and great off shore pic up to 20 lb braid the 5-6 6500 are catfish salmon and light offshore many tuna and dorado in 6-7 k reels lots of line capacity for running fish There’s a difference in a 30 3500 I like the 2500-3500 for bass and inshore fishing covers your 30” plus reds and large spec trout for the bass man. No larger than 4 k especially if casting a lot keep the weight down

  4. Which spinning reel would be a good choice for saltwater fishing ? Alaskan Halibut and Lingcod weighing any where from 20 to 160 lbs ?

  5. Best you tube tips on reels I’ve watched. Thanks Captain. I’m running a Shimano Siena 4000 with 20 pound braid and a abu garcia rayrex rod which is lightweight but an take up to 20 pound line. Reel is quite small for 4000 and I feel like I’ve found a good set up for smaller and bigger fish in Sydney harbour for fishing off the wharfs.

  6. My Penn reel of well over a decade I think, has finally caught its last fish. I’m researching how to pick the right size reel and your video is just what I needed. Thanks so much for the hard work and sharing your knowledge with us. Very helpful 😃

  7. So for slot red drum (I’m going on vacation to Port Aransas and wanna target them) is a 4000 enough? I’m looking at getting either a 4000 or a 6000 reel for that. Any input would be appreciated!

  8. Thank you for the tips 😊

Does length of rod come into the equation? Say a 6foot, to 10 foot.. can you use same 2500-3000 reel?

For the handles that screw in, they are left OR right reels.. ones that go all the way through, they are left and right yeah? So info should be available online before purchase. Am i right?

  9. Do I need 5000 spinning reel for pike fishing with 20-80g jerks? I don’t wan to go baitcaster route, they are too expensive.

  10. Congratulations! You’re the first person I’ve seen on YT to point out that the numbering systems are not industry standard. That they may as well write small, bigger, even bigger on the spools. It’s hardly surprising that beginners are so confused – they ask the Q on FB or Reddit about sizes and get a load of advice with no baseline or context. Long live the tackle shop. Nice one. Subbed.

  11. what if the spinning reel i’m willing to buy has basically the same weight between size 3000 and size 4000? should i buy the bigger one or the small one?

  12. Thanks for the info. What you did really well is get a good mic to do this video. Can’t tell you how well the audio sounded given you our outside. Many people don’t pay attention to this detail. good job!

  13. The new 4000 size reels from Shimano and Daiwa weigh very little and generate less wind knots than smaller reels

  14. no boat / kayak so bank fishing all I do. most of the time I use baitcaster reels, not to happy with spin cast reels. what to do ?

  15. I have at least fifty different reals, poles, for all kinds of fishing! If you are new to fishing get what is cheap and works! You can catch fish with a stick and line anytime, if fish are in the water in front of you!

  16. Is a Penn fierce 3 4000 reel good for a beginner that wants to jump between fresh and saltwater? I don’t plan on catching anything bigger than snapper in saltwater. Should I move up to the 5000?

  17. Thank you for the video. I’m seeing that I need less reel than I thought. I’m looking to do mostly shore fishing in MD and NJ from seawalls, jetties, around bridges, etc. targeting things like fluke, bluefish, stripers, black sea bass, weakfish, black drum. I might encounter a king mackerel, black drum, or striper that could be over 50lbs, but most other fish will be below 20lbs. So I’m not sure if I should go with a 3000 or 4000 series reel. And then I suppose a 7ft rod with a medium heavy action would be sufficient? I currently have a Penn Battle II 2000 series on a 6’6" medium fast action rod with 10lb braid that was originally intended for freshwater fishing. Could that be useful in a saltwater application, or is it just too light? Thanks!

  18. Thanks for this information Captain. But, may I ask where you shot this video in Florida. Is that snow cover? I know it ain’t Matlacha. I have subscribed.

  19. I’ve been fishing since I was as a kid, I’m in my 50s now and I’d say your spot on with the comment on too large gear.it’s the number one mistake I made over the years.
It’s the same with rods. Too heavy and you find how low your casting distance is.

  20. In todays time if I can find a brick & mortar building that actually stocks the products I’m searching for I’m buying it! I will support THAT businesses. Not to mention if they have knowledgeable sales staff to help is a definite plus. Also if you get home and notice something wrong you can exchange it right away. I will happily pay a little more for that expertise as more questions arise.

  21. I just bought a 6000 series megaton. Starting to think I went too big. Plan on using it for some salmon fishing but not sure for what else? Maybe pier casting Cleo’s for Browns? Either way, my new pole will be big lol

  22. Excellent information on the through body handle or the screw into the body handle that I did not know, and this is after having fished for decades.

  23. What lb would you recommend on a 3000 for monofilament? I fish in bass tournaments, I currently have 10lb test but was looking to go a bit higher to be able to bring the fish in fast
