DAIWA SPINMATIC 4-Piece Travel Ultralight [First Impressions]

DAIWA SPINMATIC 4-Piece Travel Ultralight [First Impressions]

My family and I went on a vacation to Florida so I decided to pick up a budget-friendly travel ultralight rod to test out if I had time. Fortunately I was able to sneak out for a few fishing sessions throughout the trip (shoutout to my wife for taking baby duty during those sessions).

I was happy that I caught a ton of Ladyfish! It made it even better that they were all caught on Mule Fishing gear – Donkey Tail or Mule Minnow 3.2 on a 3/32oz Mule Jig. They weren’t the hardest fighting fish of my life but the cool part was that they could jump super high so that was fun to watch.

  1. Probably a lady fish you need to give it drag since lady fish has soft mouths very easy to tear, lady fish gets big my pb lady is around a meter long

  2. I was waiting for the Florida newbie experience… vacationer brings the light stuff for fun and a jack cuts one of those lady fish in half and runs you up and down the bar trying not to loose your rod. Ask me how i know… nice video thanks

  3. Im headed to the Everglades in April and plan on doing a little fishing. Do you think this combo will serve me well?

  4. I look forward to these ultralight rod reviews that you do and I’ve learned a lot watching your videos as well so I appreciate everything you do.
I was wondering if you could do a review on the field and stream tec lite ultralight rod? I purchased one but I haven’t seen much about it

  5. Ever fish a willow-vibe jig head/trailer? BOOM…’as Roland sez’, "Do it son"…make a micro mule chatter willow dilleo. Perfect for that bendini mod action.

  6. I am a big fan of the travel rod concept. I don’t know why, but I think I’m obsessed with the cases they come in. It’s actually hilarious, I have a 10 foot long fly rod locker on top of my truck, but won’t buy a fly rod anymore that won’t break down to at least 4 pieces. 🤣

I also just bought a 4 piece Fenwick Eagle. I didn’t need it, but I liked the tube. 😁

  7. Just wanted to thank you for all your ned rig tips. Caught a bass every other cast for four hours straight a few days ago, then yesterday I landed my first carp on it. Loving the trd craw.

  8. Nathan i have been watching you a long time. Love that the toothy lizard fish did no damage to the mule minnow despite his dragon teeth. Really enjoying the rod & reel and line demos but only because you are transparent, not on the take, smart and very clear about what you like AND WHY. Context is everything and i so appreciate it from someone like you who is smart, self-deprecating, experienced, and ALWAYS LEARNING!! You and i are brothers in ADHD. Love from Huskerville.

  9. I’m going to be using a 2wt fly rod for saltwater (Redington butterstick), haven’t gotten anything on it yet but im definitely going to be using lighter gear in the future, hopefully BFS as well.

  10. Do you think the Presso travel rod would have worked also? I would love to have a little travel rod to take on beach vacations to just play around with on the beach.

  11. Ladyfish make pretty good chunk bait for fishing in the mangroves for red fish and snook, and the pooping does get annoying 😂

  12. You got me wanting to saltwater fish so bad now 😂 You could almost make a lizardfish style bait 😂 Ladyfish seem like a blast!! I can’t wait to hook into one one day. Glad you and the family got to go relax and get some sun mixed with some fishing 🍻

  13. I notice you really favor the dobyns sierra’s sensitivity like I do. I’ve been looking for a nice travel ultralight rod that can handle both saltwater and freshwater applications with the same sensitivity, and I found one. It’s a five piece UL rod excellent quality and amazing sensitivity. Definitely a fast action rod according to your standards. It’s called the Purelure Cedan flight.

  14. About how far were you able to cast? I am just getting back into fishing after several years and I always just fished live bait and really want to get into lures and jigs but my old Walmart specials in the garage are needing replacement. I went ahead and bought the Defy Silver 6 ft 6 in one piece UL with a Daiwa Revros 1000 because I love panfish. Thanks for the review videos. Now if I can just figure out the baitcaster someone gave me 🤪

  15. 👎Oh please…its a great rod….just because we all can’t afford expensive equipment like you rich boys ❗❗❗and you don’t count on your rod to feel and know you have a fish ❗❗❗

  16. The 6’ UL model is much less of a noodle…but still very functional. Unfortunately our spinmatic travel rod has taken a backseat to the Presso 6’6” UL for our travel fishing trips.

  17. I’m looking for a lightweight travel combo package. I know you like the rod but what reel would pair up with it ok? I’ll be u#ing it on my motorcycle adventures. Thanks.

  18. I backpack by streams, lakes and rivers. Just starting back to fish I need my gear to be light and compact… help me out please. I’ll be fishing for trout, maybe bass.

  19. I was a longliner in the Gulf of Mexico one summer and we used a lot of lady fish for bait. Heck of a experience to say the least lol

  20. I have the 6’ Spinmatic and the 5’6” Presso too. While I agree the Presso is the superior of the two in regards to UL fishing I have to say that my 6’ Spinmatic definitely seems to have more backbone then the 7’ version you were using.

  21. Love your UL reviews. Is one difference between the Spinmatoc and Presso that the former is made for saltwater and the latter is not? I can’t tell from the Daiwa website whether that’s an intended difference; is it a coincidence that you bought the Spinmatic for SW? Thx.

  22. Can’t waits for my first time Mule order to arrive today. I was wondering if it will work in the surf….then I come across this video lol.

  23. I’m planning on getting the 5’6” and pair it up with kastking zephyr sfs 1000. Will be my creek river rig.

  24. Did the guides rust at all from the saltwater? How did the reel do? I finally bought a basic Penn saltwater reel for the same kind of fishing. I absolutely love Ladyfish on the UL! For us Midwestern guys this is a blast.

  25. I need one of those to keep in my car so I am ready whenever I see water. I like noodley rods when working small crankbaits.

  26. Lizardfish is correct. Voracious little bastards. And you’d probably shake and poop too if Godzilla caught you
